The Web is a fact of life and we seek to integrate it into our services. This starts with our web site, but also extends to our growing line of digital services and products.
Site Design
The Web is transforming how we communicate, it is the medium of our age. We believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, so we know that images and multimedia are key parts of how all of us use the Web. The web is a shared by all, so standards are needed to prevent it from becoming a technical Tower of Babel. We are striving to build a web site that relies upon standards-based solutions so that it can be enjoyed by all. To this end, we rely upon HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We are striving to make this site fully accessible, but there are too many browsers for us to have tested all of them.
Your Security
We urge everyone to upgrade to modern browsers. You owe it to yourself to be running a secure browser. The Internet has become a battle ground between commercial hackers and the rest of us. Browsers are a key battle ground, and old browsers are simply less evolved. For the web builders, the newer browsers are preferred because they more faithfully implement the web standards defined by organizations like the World Wide Web Consortium. In addition to running the most recent version of your preferred browser, we ask that you enable JavaScript.
The first think you see should be our slide show. Many photographers use Flash players, but we are experimenting with JavaScript. In part this is to avoid requiring you to install a Flash plugin, sinc there have been at least 50 security issues with Flash. All browsers come with JavaScript, so you already have that installed. The slideshow on the home page is dumbcrossfade by Sebring Creative. The galleries are build using the jQuery slimbox2 plugin. This was written by Christophe Beyls, a Swiss developer. Christrophe is a friendly fellow, but you need to read French to follow his blog. Please let us know if you have any problems with the slide show or galleries. If the image transitions are rough, we suggest that you try Google's Chrome, Apple's Safari, Opera or the Mozilla Foundations' Firefox. The JavaScript performance in Internet Explore is quite slow, at least until the release of IE9.
Intellectual Property & Shoutouts to sharing people
The wait animation is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence. So thank you Francesco Balduni. Find out more about Francesco at sanbaldo.com.
The RSS feeds use a bottle caps icon from neworxspace at deviantart. He shares the icons but asks that we not take credit. So thanks noeworxpace.
Page layout in CSS can be an arcaine art. Browser incompatibilities make this quite tedious. So we were lucky to find Joshua Clayton'sBlueprint CSS. Blueprint is another great open source product that takes much of the pain out of building a site's CSS. To me, blueprint just helps a web site looks more polished. The spacing seems more like a glossy magazine and less like the technical training manual look of so many web sites. So even my limited CSS skills are able to make a good looking site.
The page background has faint purple fleur-de-lys pattern over a 'Delft Blue' background. The image was created by Sue Chastain. She has generously shared her work at GraphicsSoft.about.com. Under her terms of use, we may use her work but not redistribute. So if you want it, please get it from her. We did modify the image by reducing it's opacity to 5% to reduce the contrast in the background.
Link Exchanges
We have found several sites that exchange links for photography. PortraitPhotos.com lists photographers around the US.
Oddly, they would prefer links to
underwaterphotography.com. We also have a reciprocal link agreement with
